3.5 stars
This is not a love story. The cover may
make you think that, but this is not it. It’s a reality check. Crashing Into
You touches into the issues of reckless, excessive drinking and the
consequences that may happen when a person indulges too much in this vice.
The beginning of the book was very
heartbreaking. We witness the last few moments of the lives of three people who
would have lived full, happy lives were it not for the recklessness of two
people. One of them is Sydney. Right at the very beginning readers understand
her guilt and heartache even though the accident had happened two years ago.
Because of it, Sydney grew very wary of parties while in college. She didn’t
disapprove in the act itself, but rather people’s habit of drinking too much
and then driving afterwards. Her accident had been enough to drill the thought
into her mind.
Evan, as mentioned in the synopsis, is
Melanie’s boyfriend. Melanie is Syd’s roommate. She was a nice enough person
who had some awkward moments with Sydney. They weren’t particularly close even
after spending a year living together, but when they could have been closer
friends if given the chance, I think.
The synopsis also tells what’s going to
happen early on in the story. Melanie dies… and the circumstances surrounding
it become the main conflict throughout the story. It doesn’t veer into the
mystery genre, but there are questions that come up. As Sydney finds out more
about the night Melanie died, the more questions arise. Who and what caused
Melanie to act like she did? My heart pinched as I read more about what really
went on that night.
As I said, this story is not a love story
but a reality check. I honestly did not particularly like Sydney or Evan. In
fact the person I liked the most was Lukas, Sydney’s gay best friend. He’s the
most real and sincere character, in my opinion, and the most mature. Sure he
had his silly days (Meryl Streep movie marathons? LOL) but comes clean with his
feelings and thoughts. At the end of the day, he makes the right decisions. I
just wish I could say the same for Sydney and Lukas.
Sydney, in spite of her guardedness against
parties and reckless drinking and driving, she ends up doing exactly the one
thing she feared the most. Evan, in spite of him saying he loves Sydney, I just
don’t find him to be sincere or indeed mature enough to believe in his words.
He behaved like a douche for the most part. L I
also think that they moved forward with their relationship too soon after
Melanie’s death.
I am, however, giving Crashing Into You close to 4 stars because it delivers a message that I think young people today need to
understand. I might sounding like a prude now, hahahah! But really… many things
in this book reek of immaturity, irresponsibility, recklessness and plain
stupidity. Although I didn’t like the characters I appreciated the message of
the book. I may be wrong in assuming the author intended for that to happen,
but that’s the positive I found in this story.
Crashing Into You ends in a minor
cliffhanger (or at least I think it’s minor). Sydney and Evan will have to face
the legal repercussions of the final events in the book. I hope friendships will
survive…!
