Consequences of Deception

4.5 stars

This is, without a doubt, the hottest, sexiest, most erotic book I have read so far in 2014! *fans self!* Seriously! This is my first book by Ella Fox, so I didn't know she could write such scorching scenes. It was a good surprise because she writes them really well!

Now for the characters and the story of CONSEQUENCES OF DECEPTION ....

The prologue of the book happens 4 1/2 years earlier. We see the main characters Sloane and Killian testing the waters of their attraction. Actually, Sloane is literally wading her way--seductively, I might add--towards her childhood friend and first love, Killian. They are neighbors and both families are apparently very close. Sloane is living with her father while Killian is with her sister since their parents have already passed. I liked this opening chapter because it established that they are close friends, and that out of that friendship developed a strong, romantic attraction. The chemistry between them is just off the charts!

The following chapter proceeds to present day. Things are very, very different now... and it's very disappointing, to say the least. I felt the sadness and isolation Sloane felt in her present circumstance. There's also a huge newsflash: Killian is no longer her friend. Their relationship, which showed so much promise over four years ago, is now kaput. :(

Readers are teased with the following facts:
  1. Killian is no longer the besotted young man he once was. We actually learn that he feels nothing but hatred towards Sloane now. :(
  2. Sloane is now living with her uncle Stephen and his wife, Celine.
  3. Celine is a tyrant who keeps Sloane tethered like a dog. Not only is she not allowed to go out as she pleases, choose her own college course or her wardrobe, but she also gets verbal abuse from Celine.
  4. Sloane has only one true friend left, Demi.

What quickly follows is a series of events that just boggled my mind. I have to say though, the rest of the story will only appeal to readers who secretly find caveman behavior romantic when executed properly. Oh gosh how do I say this... "proper" caveman behavior?? haha! I hope you get what I mean with this though, I mean, there are some alpha characters out there whose domineering attitude would just annoy the heck out of you. Killian did annoy me, even infuriate me because of his treatment of Sloane. On the other hand, as the reader, I just sense that there's something more to this story. It became clear that there is a misunderstanding that's why he now hates her so much. This doesn't excuse his behavior of course, but it's just that his genuine concern for her sometimes slips through the cracks. So, whenever he behaves like a jerk towards her again, I just kept thinking who the hell fed you lies that you became a heartless monster???

It is mentioned in the synopsis that Killian bought Sloane. Why he did it and what were the events that led to that decision, well, that's what you will want to know!

I really, really, really want to discuss these characters and certain events more, but that would be spoiling you! Just know that you'll be in for surprise, after surprise, after surprise.. =D I did like the leads though, plus the secondary characters: Killian's bodyguards, Demi and Demi's parents. Although, there were times when I wanted to shake Sloane so hard for letting Killian treat her so horribly. I'm not sure if everyone will like Killian, too, because as I said he is an absolute a**hole in the early parts of the story. There was one thing in particular that he did that just killed me! It deadened Sloane inside, and I just felt the same way too: absolutely numb. :'(

But honestly, I don't think he's completely unlikable. Once the deceptions were uncovered, he did become quite the devoted and once again besotted man *YAY for that!* He did remind me of Christian Grey! Quite the jerk at the beginning.. okay, at most times.. but you cannot question his devotion to the woman he loves once he came to accept it.

CONSEQUENCES OF DECEPTION is really the perfect title for this story. If it weren't for certain people's deceptions, two young people would have found love early on in their lives. Two families would have remained whole and happy. It's really sad how much destruction lies could do, especially when money and greed enter the picture. These realizations, plus the romance and the steaminess of the book, will stay with me for a long time.

If you are looking for a scorching romance with angst, and if you don't mind an overbearing hero who takes his time to listen to his heart and let it take over his rage, I highly recommend CONSEQUENCES OF DECEPTION .
