Blog Tour: The Fixer Series ~ Deception and Promiscuous by Alyson Raynes

Today I am reviewing the first two books in The Fixer Series by Alyson Raynes. The third book, REDEMPTION, is scheduled for release on April 22, 2014, so watch out for it!

Book 1:
Deception

3 stars

There is serious potential for DECEPTION ! There is very good story here, but I'm not overly thrilled by its presentation. If you think about it, many of the extremely popular and successful books out there have quite simple storylines--simpler even than in this book. It's just that they are written in such a way that you can immediately connect with the characters. You sympathize with them, think along with them and feel what they feel instead of just observing the story as though you're merely the audience in an outdoor play and you're seated at the very back row. Unfortunately, that's how I felt with this one.

On the other hand, like I said there is a very good story that's being established in this book. But before that let's get to the characters.

Dylan is described as incredibly handsome, has a commanding aura that captivates people whenever he steps inside a room. He is obviously wealthy and successful. Brooke is several years his senior, but apparently Dylan is attracted to women older than him. As stated in the synopsis, Brooke is in a long-term relationship at the beginning of the story, but she catches the guy in flagrante delicto. In normal circumstances it would have been so easy for the woman to just pack up, leave the ex and proceed with life. This is The Fixer Series though, so there are so many surprises in store for Brooke!

I won't say more about the rest of the events, but I can tell you this: things are not what they seem. You get the impression that this is more than just a damsel in distress being rescued and romanced by a billionaire. I only wish though that the narration was executed better. For instance, the first chapter seems to fly by because everything is just described. Brooke goes for an interview. One of the panel is handsome as sin. She tries to be confident. Seems like the interview is going well. It's over. She goes home. It goes something like that, and there's not even enough dialogue going on. I think this is the reason why I'm not really connecting with the characters. What kept me going was the overarching story and the haunch that this is shaping up to be an exciting story line.

Book 2:
Promiscuous

3.5 stars

Now this is where the surprises level up times ten! There were so many things I did not see coming! The first book ends in a cliffhanger, so thank goodness that this one's already published. I immediately started the next book the moment I was done with the first one.

If you read the synopsis for PROMISCUOUS before reading Deception, then you'll find a spoiler: a secondary character in the first book will die. This event actually happens a bit into the story already, and it will be the beginning of an even more complicated story line for this series.

Readers will know that Brooke needs protection from something--or someone--and Dylan is the man who can give that to her. And more. This book is just as steamy as the prequel. More importantly, this book establishes the depth of Dylan's devotion to Brooke, and the lengths he will take to keep her safe and alive. It's not clear exactly what the threat is during the first half. When we get to the second half, things start to get more exciting. It's scary-exciting by the way, because the threat is so much bigger than a simple revenge plot.

There are huge, and I do men huge revelations in this book. One of them were revealed in a hospital scene, and I thought, "hey this is major." Oh, how wrong I was! There was an even bigger secret and once I knew what it was I was caught so off guard, I literally yelled "what?!" into my kindle. I tapped back to make sure what I was reading was correct. Goodness...!

Once again, the narration of the book was something I didn't really like. It seemed to just skim over too many events that it prevented me from really connecting with the characters. On the other hand, the fact that I was so blown away by the turn of events, and that I felt a strong urge to throttle at least two people despite my "disconnect", speaks a lot about the authors skill in plotting a story.

Just remember one thing when you're reading this series: things are not as they seem! There are surprises and major bombs waiting at every turn. PROMISCUOUS took a turn that I totally did not expect! Until now I'm still trying to wrap my mind around the events here. The last quarter of this book was just.....!!!! LOL

Needless to say, I am anticipating the next book, REDEMPTION. I want to know what will happen next!!! April 22 is not too far away, so you can begin reading books 1 and 2 right now too. :)
