Royally Lost

This is a wonderful YA story from Angie Stanton. This is the first book I read of hers, so I'm not sure if her books are purely YA. If that's the case, I won't hesitate to pick up another one she writes if ever I'm in the mood again to read Young Adult.
ROYALLY LOST
is a sweet, cute story that has a Disney vibe to it. As I was reading I imagined things as though I were watching a teen movie. The story reminded me of some of those movies: The Prince & Me, Monte Carlo, and a bit of How to Deal. This is a very wholesome story, so moms should be comfortable letting their teenagers read this one. Or maybe not. LOL, it does have a heroine who disobeys her parents in order to spend more time with a stranger in a foreign country!
Yes, the main characters Becca and Nikolai behave recklessly in this book, but then again, that is what this book is all about. It's also about growing up and learning to make choices that will have a positive effect on their lives and the people they are responsible for.
Becca is in Europe with her brother Dylan, her dad, and her stepmom Vicky, supposedly to have quality bonding time as a family. Unfortunately, Becca and Dylan are simply not feeling the family love... they are opposed to Vicky in general and their dad doesn't seem to be any different from his usual neglectful self. The two kids end up straying from their tour group and explore on their own. This is how Becca meets Nikolai.
Nikolai is the crown prince of Mondovia, a tiny kingdom whose royal family are nothing more than expensive figureheads. He wants to break free from the claustrophobic hold his parents has over every aspect of his life. His days are scheduled and his future is mapped out for him: join military school, continue with appearances in various political and social events, uphold the traditions of the royal family, be an exemplary individual with a squeaky-clean reputation, and basically be a perfect heir to the throne. But he's had enough, and so he escapes from the palace, wanting to experience anonymity, experience life, and hopefully find himself in the process.
When Becca and Nikolai meet, they are instantly intrigued by each other and become very comfortable with each other's company. Even Dylan easily befriends Nikolai. However, their time together is very short, and they both know this. They make the most of it by getting to know each other and enjoying the wonderful cities they are in. If anything, I was glad that Becca was finally less bratty and began to appreciate the opportunity of exploring Europe!
I like that the author chose to make this a PG, YA story. ROYALLY LOST
explores the possibility of meeting new people with whom you have an instant connection. It does sound reckless, but there are times when fate deals you with a lucky hand and that person becomes very significant in your life. It also reminds us that teens are shaped by their experiences as younger kids. If they rebel or be good girls and boys, there's usually a very good reason why.
I REALLY enjoyed reading ROYALLY LOST. It's actually quite short, but the ending wraps everything up nicely. If you're in the mood for a sweet YA romance, this is a good story to curl up with. :)
Synopsis:
Dragged on a family trip to Europe’s ancient cities, Becca wants nothing more than to go home. Trapped with her emotionally distant father, over-eager stepmother, and a brother who only wants to hook up with European hotties, Becca is miserable. That is until she meets Nikolai, a guy as mysterious as he is handsome. And she unknowingly finds herself with a runaway prince.
Nikolai has everything a guy could ask for-he's crown prince, heir to the throne, and girls adore him. But the one thing he doesn't have...is freedom. Staging a coup, he flees his kingdom and goes undercover on his own European tour.
When Nikolai and Becca meet, it’s their differences that draw them together. Sparks fly as they share a whirlwind of adventures, all the while dodging his royal guard. But Becca's family vacation ends in a matter of days. Will Nikolai and Becca be forced to say goodbye forever, will his destiny catch up to him, or will they change history forever?
Angie Stanton never planned on writing books; she wanted to be a Rockette. However, growing up in rural Wisconsin, with her brothers' 4-H pigs as pets, dance didn't work out. Instead she became an avid daydreamer. After years of perfecting stories in her head, she began to write them down, and the rest is history.
Angie is the author of six books including Royally Lost, Rock and a Hard Place, and Snapshot. She graduated with a Journalism degree from the University of Wisconsin, and is a proud double finalist of the National Readers Choice Awards for Love 'em or Leave 'em.
