Reciprocity
by K.I. Lynn
Book 3 of the Breach Series
3.5 stars
I had really high expectations for RECIPROCITY because really liked the other books in this trilogy, especially book 2! Although this third installment wrapped up the loose ends of the story arc, I was expecting a bit more on the story development.
Book 2, INFRACTION, ended on a happy-for-now note. I gushed over it (here's my review) because the sex was toned down (in terms of frequency because the hotness factor was very much up to date!) and the character development rocketed a hundred notches up the scale! For me, it had some of the best counseling scenes ever. The emotional development of Nathan and Lila in book 2 was just incredible. By the time it ended, the issues between the two lovers are done and dealt with; the threat that hovered over their heads, however, was not.
That threat was what I was looking forward to the most in RECIPROCITY! I was very scared and worried for the characters because the threat to their lives was very genuine. You could just tell it wasn't something that could be easily solved by a confrontation or handcuffs being snapped on the bad guys. The threat was HUGE, and it terrified me. So I was disappointed when that issue was only addressed during the last 30% of the book.
In all fairness, that 30% really got my blood pumping! I was nervous while reading, clutching my kindle tightly out of worry. The urgency, the sense of danger and hopelessness, those things I expected to find were all there. I just wish more time was given for the exciting portions of the story. I could have done with a shorter narrative on the trip to Disneyland. I think it's supposed to give readers the sense of it being the calm before the storm, but for me it just dragged out the story and held back the parts that I was waiting for the most. I can only speak for myself, of course.
I still like the Breach Trilogy as a whole though. The second book is my favorite out of the three though. But of course, you can't not read the conclusion to Nathan and Lila's… **deep breath**…tumultuous, angsty, problematic, honestly toxic relationship.
Oh by the way, if you liked book 1 because of the frequent smexin, you'll have that again in book 3! Still not a fan of Nathan's brand of dirty-talking though.
Story-wise, I really liked that both of them acknowledged the highly sexual and bordering-on-obsessive nature of their relationship. Yes they love each other, and that's very important. However, they also cannot live without the other; and given the threat to their lives, it was really sad to see them realize that if one of them ever gets killed, the one left would most likely take his/her own life. :( I know there are readers who'll say these characters are weak because of this, but I think that's precisely the point that the story is showing us. That's who these characters are. They are stronger when together, and alone, well… that's something I'm really not so confident about. Nathan and Lila are too emotionally traumatized, and their only balm is each other. I'd say they are still a work in progress even after the book ends.
RECIPROCITY is definitely a must-have if you have the first two books. It wraps up the series nicely and will give readers the closure for Nathan and Lila's story. :)
"Talk dirty to me?" I whispered into his ear.
He slammed his lips to mine, then pulled back, breathless. "Always."
