Precarious (Jokers' Wrath MC, #1)
Release Date: August 4, 2014
Book 1 of the Jokers' Wrath MC

Synopsis:

In darkness, we find danger. In danger, I find Beau.

Ash is a prison guard, she's tough, she's strong and she never backs away from a fight. She takes her job seriously, she takes her training seriously, and everything in her life goes as planned.

Until the day he is brought into the prison.

She'll never forget meeting Beau 'Krypt' Dawson for the first time. She'll never forget his haunted eyes and his numb expression. He's a member of the Jokers Wrath MC and it is said he killed an innocent family in the middle of a cafe, in cold blood.

Deranged. Crazy. Psychotic.

All those words describe the infamous Krypt, but Ash suspects there's far more to the quiet man than meets the eye. Secrets are being hidden by the club, information is being kept under wraps. Krypt is silent for a reason.

Ash is desperate to know that reason.

Continually fighting, Krypt is transferred to a high security prison. Ash is in charge. She's always prepared, always alert. Not even her skills will stop the club from ambushing them and taking back Krypt. Only Ash ends up right in the middle of it.

They take her, too.

Now she's stuck with a Motorcycle Club who are tougher than any prisoner she's ever laid eyes on. And they won't let her go. She's too much of a risk. Until the situation can be sorted, they send her and Krypt into the mountains together....alone.

An epic, dangerous love will be built on the foundations of darkness.

4 stars

I missed Bella Jewel's biker books! :D I'm a huge fan of her Sinners MC, which anyone who follows my page will no doubt know. After three books and a novella, the series closed and the author moved on to standalones and a pirate series. This series will be the second time she writes for the MC genre.

I was so excited for PRECARIOUS because aside from loving Bella Jewel's previous work, the synopsis for the book was just boss! Ash is a prison guard and Beau aka "Krypt" is the dangerous new inmate. For some reason, these two have an instant connection no matter how impossible the situation is: their first words are spoken through the slats of a prison door, and they are literally from opposing ends. She's on the side of the law while he is the one person the law is on the lookout for.

Not too long after, a conflict arises that puts Ash in a very precarious situation. :D I could be wrong, but this is my understanding of how the title came about. Beau had no reason at all to save Ash from sure death, but he did—for reasons even he couldn't really understand at the beginning.

I really loved seeing Beau struggle between his loyalty and responsibilities to his club versus the instinct to protect and claim Ash for his own. Speaking of Ash, I really admire this girl! She is tough physically, emotionally and mentally, which also means she's an excellent prison guard. She's well-liked even by the inmates themselves. When she was betrayed by the very people she considered friends, she even had it in her to be sad and grieve for their wasted lives.

When it comes to the romance in the story, Bella Jewel doesn't fail to deliver a couple that oozes with chemistry and sexual tension. They have incredibly sexy banter that honestly seems like foreplay already. Just check out the teasers at the FB page, they are steamy!

Beau and Ash had to face a lot of struggles first though. The threat to their lives and the territorial war that the Jokers are currently embroiled in are just two. There are also Beau's ex (I really wanted to hit him in the head regarding this issue), and Ash's dilemma between the work she loves and the man she loves.

There's also this problem caused by Ash's denseness where her friend Santana is concerned, and Santana's comeuppance for denying her true feelings to herself and to everyone else around her. Ugghh, I wanted to yell at everyone involved in this subplot problem…! We'll see its resolution in the next book.

To sum up, I really enjoyed PRECARIOUS. It's sexy, exciting, shocking, very complicated, qualities I look for in an MC book. So why not 5 stars? Well, you know how some authors are so good at what they do, they become their own competition? That's what happened here, I guess. The bar for me was set very high by HEAVEN'S SINNERS, Sinners MC book 2. It had the nitty-gritty of the biker world plus the full gut punch of one heck of an emotional story. My heart hurt a lot while reading it, but it was the good kind of hurt. It was emotional and very well-written; it was memorable. I find that this doesn't have that emotional gut punch, hence the 4.5 star rating. Compared to a few other biker books I've read though, PRECARIOUS is easily a solid 5!

Oh, one last thing! The rest of the secondary characters introduced in this first book are very interesting. Many existing couples and potential couples are introduced, though it's obvious as early as three-fourths into the story which couple will be next: Maddox and Santana. I am very excited about these two! They have a lot of history together and it's obvious that their lives will always be intertwined. Add the obvious sexual attraction, a major secret, and voila! We have a very promising next installment for the Jokers Wrath series.
