My Review: ❤❤❤❤ 4 stars
I was very surprised with A REASON TO KILL. The cover and the graphic teasers gave me the impression that this is a serious story. I mean, there's a killer involved, so I thought this would be one of those romantic thrillers with a serious narrative tone. In truth, this book is a whole lot of laughs!
The humor in this book is actually what pushed my rating to 4 stars. The romance is as good as it gets, and I must say Max has done a lot of really impressive things, but his crazy-gutsy grandma and her equally crazy-gutsy gal pal just steals the limelight whenever they appear on page. I love the idea of these two old women stirring up trouble in an out-of-the-way village where everyone knows everyone, and nothing remains a secret for too long. The kind of trouble that involves glow-in-the-dark vibrators and chocolate penis sticks. Oooh, the fun!
Now for the main couple. I know the hero is being described as Thor, but because of the fun tone of the narrative, I imagine him being a lot like Chris Pratt! He is handsome and has a hot, strong body, as can be expected from a guy who's very hands-on with his lumber business. Mia is a clumsy heroine for whom climbing up a hill can be a dangerous exercise. Although they did not, to the highest level, scorch the pages for me, they were a charismatic pair who balanced each other out quite nicely. Mia brings out Max's protective and playful side, and Max in turn makes her feel feminine and sexy in spite of her Care Bears and koala shirts. I loved that particular quirk of hers, by the way. She has a funny way of looking at things too, and her fixations on the different types of Maxes made me laugh a lot!
What I wasn't completely satisfied with was the whole killer subplot, especially since the momentum for that arc took a dip midway through the book. It took the backseat as other aspects in the story progressed... then the killer reappeared again, and by then I just wanted for that subplot to be over and done with.
That issue aside, I think readers will still find plenty to be happy with in this book. I recommend A REASON TO KILL if you are in the mood for something light, a romance with no whining heroine or annoying hero, a few sexy scenes, a small-town setting, and secondary characters who are very charming and funny.
